Botswana is the destination that most serious southern African overlanders are building towards. The country is vast, largely unfenced, and infrastructure-light by design - which means self-sufficiency isn't optional, it's the baseline. The Okavango Delta in the northwest is unlike anywhere else on earth: a massive inland river system that fans out into the Kalahari and creates a permanent oasis of waterways, islands, and floodplains teeming with game. Third Bridge in Moremi, the most famous campsite on the continent, sits on a palm island where elephants walk through camp and lions are heard nightly. East of the Delta, the Makgadikgadi Pans offer a completely different experience - vast white salt flats, the Boteti River with its zebra migration, and Kubu Island rising from the pan like something from another planet. To the north, Chobe National Park holds the highest concentration of elephant in Africa. 4x4 is not a preference in Botswana, it's a requirement for anything beyond the tar roads. Deep sand, river crossings, and long distances between fuel stops are the standard. Come fully equipped: recovery gear, dual battery, water capacity for at least two days, and a vehicle that you know is sorted. Botswana rewards preparation generously.
