Gauteng doesn't have wilderness - it has escapes. The province is South Africa's engine room, 16 million people in an area smaller than the Western Cape's Cederberg wilderness, and the camping options reflect that reality. What Gauteng does have is proximity: within 90 minutes of Johannesburg or Pretoria you can be in the Magaliesberg, the Dinokeng Game Reserve, the Cradle of Humankind, or the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. These aren't destination campsites in the way that Limpopo or the Northern Cape are - they're decompression points. Somewhere to light a fire on a Friday night and not look at a screen until Sunday. For overlanders based in Gauteng, the province mostly functions as the launch point for everything else: the N1 north to Limpopo and Botswana, the N4 east to Mpumalanga and Kruger, the N14 west towards Botswana and the Kgalagadi. The Hartbeespoort area and the broader Magaliesberg corridor has the densest concentration of campsites in the province, a mix of small farm operations, nature reserves, and private game farms. For a quick mid-week reset or a shakedown run before a longer trip, Gauteng does the job.
