Limpopo is the serious overlanding province. This is where South African 4x4 culture has its roots - the Waterberg, the Soutpansberg, the Tuli Block border region, the lowveld approaching Kruger from the west. The terrain here is genuinely technical in places: deep sand, rocky mountain tracks, river crossings that change depending on the season. A built vehicle helps. Ground clearance matters. Recovery gear gets used. The Waterberg is the closest thing to bush camping on the highveld - red rock kloofs, dense bushveld, and a network of private game reserves with camping that offers the full predator experience without the Kruger crowds. The Soutpansberg is different again: subtropical forest, mist-draped peaks, birding that draws specialists from overseas, and a culture that reflects the mix of Venda and Tsonga heritage that defines the far north. The Tuli Block in the east is 4x4 country proper, a patchwork of private reserves and communal land along the Limpopo River, with elephant, lion, and leopard crossing unfenced into Zimbabwe. If you've been overlanding in South Africa for a while and you haven't spent serious time in Limpopo, you haven't really been overlanding.
