Tau Camp - Matamba Bushcamp

About this campsite

Tau sits in open woodland with no fences. Giraffe, eland, zebra, nyala, sable, kudu and impala move through the camp rather than past it, and that shapes how you use the place: where you leave food, how you walk to the ablutions at night, what you do with a cooler box. It is the point of camping here. Five sites spread across four hectares, connected by footpaths through the bush: Francolin, Hornbill, Drongo, Oriole and Kingfisher. They sit 150 to 200 metres apart, so you will not see or hear your neighbours. Each site takes a couple or a few families travelling together, and each has a fireplace, a braai grid, a tap and a power point for an extension lead. The four bathrooms are shared between the five sites, and they are the part people talk about. Built around standing trees, with rock as the shower floor. The main one is thatched with a shower, two toilets and a plug for charging. There is a separate outside shower, an outside toilet, and a fourth with a thatch roof over the toilet and basin and an open-air shower under the trees. Gas geysers throughout, so hot water does not run out. The kitchen and wash-up area is central: two sinks, an info board, WiFi, and tables and chairs where people end up comparing routes. Below the camp there is a small splash pool with a rustic fence to keep game and small children out, lawn, wooden loungers and a martini seat facing west. Braai wood and ice are sold on site.
