Why we filmed this one
Trips like these are nothing new to us. We've been doing them for years, usually coming home with little more than a few photos and some good stories.
With some of our core crew working in the film industry, we figured it was about time we brought all the toys along, documented one properly and gave it the attention it deserved in post-production.
The route
We left Cape Town in the dark and pointed the convoy north. The Richtersveld sits far enough out to demand some commitment: long days on the road, proper prep and a four-day window that doesn't leave much slack.
Somewhere past the end of the tar with the tyres aired down, the trip changed. Gravel, dust and the first of the mountains. We had a rough idea of where we'd sleep that first night, but the final camp came down to map checks, radio chatter and a few calls made on the move.
Day two was the big one. A long road in through harsh, empty country and a small town, then the canyon: slow, technical driving, spotters out, every line talked through, and a small 'technical issue'. The reward was the Orange River. Some of us have camped on its banks for years and it's still one of our favourite places to wake up.
Day three ran slower. Coffee, a line in the water, then rock crawling and a couple of river crossings before a quick fuel and food stop. We gave the evening to golden hour and one last camp, and on day four we, unfortunately, turned back home to Cape Town.
Real trips. Real stories. The kind of content we've always wanted to see coming out of South Africa.
