KwaZulu-Natal packs more landscape variety into a single province than most countries manage. In the west you've got the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg - the Berg - with high-altitude camping below basalt cliffs that drop sheer from the escarpment. Monk's Cowl, Injasuti, Giant's Castle: these are basecamp destinations, places you stay for three nights and explore on foot. Head north and the terrain shifts entirely - the Midlands give way to Zululand, and Zululand gives way to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park on the coast. This is malaria territory and it's wildlife-serious: hippo, croc, elephant, black rhino. Camping here requires a different mindset to a Western Cape farm camp. Further north still, towards Kosi Bay and the Mozambique border, you're into remote coastal wilderness with freshwater lakes, turtle nesting beaches, and some of the least-visited campsites in the country. 4x4 is essential for anything beyond the paved approach roads. The central Drakensberg valley camps are accessible to most vehicles; the coastal and northern wilderness areas are not. KZN rewards people who do their homework and punishes people who show up unprepared. Come with a plan, recovery gear, and at least a few days to spare.
