More about camping in Western Cape

The Western Cape is where most SA overlanders cut their teeth, and for good reason. Within a few hours of Cape Town you've got the Cederberg - arguably the most iconic overlanding destination in the country - with its sandstone formations, rock art, farm dams, and network of dirt roads that reward a properly set-up vehicle. Push further north and the Tankwa Karoo opens up: vast, silent, and brutal in the best possible way. Head east along the R62 and you're into the Klein Karoo, with the Swartberg Pass connecting you to the Great Karoo proper. The terrain here isn't technical by Limpopo or Mpumalanga standards - most of the Western Cape's best campsites are accessible with high clearance rather than full 4x4 - but the landscapes more than make up for it. You're camping under stars that Cape Town residents have forgotten exist, beside rivers that only run after winter rain, on farms where the owners have been doing it this way for generations. The Western Cape also has the most developed network of farm campsites in South Africa - small operations run by farming families who open their land to travellers. These are the spots that never appear on the big booking platforms, passed around by word of mouth and trip reports. That's exactly what this directory is for.
