About this campsite

Melton Wold is a working sheep and game farm on the R63 outside Victoria West. The campsite is a grassed area next to the pool, with ten stands, each one already set up with a water tap, a power point and a stone braai. It is a working farm, so game moves through the camp and you will probably have company at some point. Ablutions cover it properly: hot showers, toilets, basins, a dishwashing area and outdoor drying lines. The drying lines are a small detail, but they tell you the place is run by people who understand what a wet camp looks like. The part worth knowing is that camping gets you the run of the guest house and everything else on the farm. That means the pool, the veranda, the bar, and a long list of things to do when you are not driving: bowls, croquet, boules, table tennis, putt-putt, plus a playground and trampoline for kids. There is hiking and biking on the property, good birding, and Karoo sky with nothing competing with it. You do not have to cook if you would rather not. Firewood, braai packs, homemade bread and garden salads are available on request, or you can eat in the guest house. The kitchen leans on the farm itself, so Karoo lamb is usually on the plate. The farm dates back to 1935 and bills itself as the oldest guest farm in South Africa.
