Offroad driving techniques

Hi guys, this is a post I think a lot of people can add to and we can learn form each other.

I would like to add what I have learned from offroad driving, seemingly small things that can make a huge difference.

I have learned from offroad driving, there are a few things that help a lot.

  1. Offline map of the area, be it Garmin Explore, Tracks 4 Africa, Waze, or Google Maps, it is a definite.
  2. Tyre deflation. Deflating your tyres when driving offroad helps with traction and can help you to not loose a tyre. Find out from the manufacturer what are the recommended pressures for different surfaces, and create a sticker or booklet to keep in your car. It helps a ton.
  3. If possible, always walk a piece of the track, this will give you a great idea of available lines, what could work and what won't work, also because you've walked it, you have an idea of what is coming next.
  4. Don't always "SEND IT", I have learned this lesson from messing around. Impatience is expensive.
  5. Weight is a factor, always be mindful of weight. Every small, seemingly light item added is extra weight which adds wear to the vehicle.
  6. Offroad driving is never quick, a 9km route can easily take 60min if not more...depending on the terrain, so just plan ahead.
  7. The most important one that I can think of, have fun!
We are so spoilt to be able to explore the beauty of South Africa and Sub Saharan Africa, enjoy every bit of it.
